Business Networking: 10 Tips

There are lots of tips and hints I could offer on this but I chose just a few that are in my mind at the moment:

1. First of all, decide why you are going from the outset - that way if anyone asks you know why you are clear as to your reasons. For example, I knew I wanted to go to Carrie Wilkerson's Business Online Success Summit (BOSS) in London recently because Carrie is one of the top female internet marketers in the world and we have worked together before and I wanted to connect up with her again. I knew her content and our conversations would impact on my business.

2. Decide what it is exactly you want to get out of the event or meeting - there should be at least 3 quality reasons: For example:

a) to meet at least 3 potential clients that I could work with,

b) to have at least 4-6 quality conversations with people my business could work with

c) agree to follow up with at least half of them

d) if it's a bigger social networking event (ie larger than a 2 or 3 person meeting) then you should be able to take a least 3-5 actionable things away from the event - ie things I can implement in my business within the following week.

e) If it is a one-to-one networking event then I should be able to name at least three steps that either take that relationship further or 3 ways as to how it will impact on my business

3. Think also about how much of your time it will take up. Cost out your time (ie how much is your time worth per hour/day) and decide whether attending the event will make up for this and how it could profit your business. Your time is the most valuable commodity in your business and you and your employees need to be held to account on how you spend it. If you are not willing to do this then treat the networking event as just a 'social' or 'day off'. Don't leave the meeting until your objectives are fulfilled.

4. Make every minute of your attendance count - get your money's worth I made sure I heard all the people I wanted to including Jenny Flintoff is a great mindset trainer, I learnt from jenny the importance of getting your head straight in your business and the need to cut out all of the stuff that is unnecessary. She is so enthusiastic in the delivery of her content it is impossible not to be re-invigorated by her style.

5. Before you arrive, try to get a list of the attendees (if appropriate) and find the people you'd really like to meet - make yourself known to them. You'll get a list if you contact the organizers. I found that Brander Simon Jordan was going to the event so I made a point of hearing what he had to say and chat with him...

6. Don't wait for people to come and talk to you - make an effort to interact, or an excuse to overtly listen in on a conversation. State your reasons and excuse yourself then come in with a pertinent question

7. Only take the cards of people you intend to contact again - likewise only distribute your cards to those you think are interested in your information, products and services. A scatter-gun approach stops you from focusing on who your genuine prospects are.

8. When you return from the event, take your notes and do a quick 10 minute review or what went well and what didn't

9. Find someone you can feed your notes back to - someone you can be accountable to and to help you decide whether it was worth it.

10. Follow up on your new contacts or the conversations that were held and take action on them. I made sure I followed up on Amy Harrison who is a copy-writing consultant from London. She gives amazing value in her content and works closely with some outstanding marketers.

Why is Networking So Important?

Networking today is vital for business and social health and well-being. When you are in a network it simply means you are in a group of like-minded people, interest group or that you share some other common denominator.

Computer Networking: This is where all the wires, leads, cables and couplings come together in one place. If these cables or wireless points didn't join up, they wouldn't be networked. Anyone today who has a wireless internet connection and more than one computer at home or in the office, all going through the one router, is networked. The joining point in this instance is the router that is the joining point of the network. This is called a LAN or Local Area Network.

This LAN is now routed through the router to your ISP or Internet Service Provider. This now forms a WAN or Wider Are Network. If you can visualise a group of small spider webs all joining at one point and going outwards to form other small webs, you will be able to understand why the Internet is called the World Wide Web.

Why is Networking So Important?

Social Networking: Years ago it used to mean (and in similar fashion still does) your group of peers that you socialise with. That is, your drinking buddies, your girlfriends, your mates, your friends. Now if you belong to a chess club or a sporting club, they are your physical social network that you as an individual depend on. When we use the term "to depend on", we mean that it is from this group of people that you get your persona from and your sense of self. Your mental health will be affected if you have a falling out or disagreement with this group of people. Your emotional health will suffer. Everyone needs friends and these are found in your social network group of friends.

This concept has now been extended to include a social network of friends and like-minded people on the internet. It has seen the massive growth of social bookmarking sites, and micro blogging sites, so that everyone can "chatter" to their group of friends in a series of short messages. The longest these micro blogs can be is up to 140 characters long. Some micro bloggers just say to their friends what they are doing now. Some people micro blog what they are going to have for dinner, while others use the blogosphere for less mundane notices.

Politicians even micro-blog to their members what is happening when they are electing a new leader for their political party! I have seen Tweets to their followers from Parliamentarians sitting in Parliament and supposedly making important decisions that will govern our lives. Personally, this disgusts me as I consider it a self-serving, irresponsible approach to setting new rules for me to live by. Worse still, is when these people pass laws that will cost me and you (the tax payer) millions or billions of dollars.

This kind of social networking is an unforeseen outcome to the ease in which everyone can micro blog today so there will no doubt be some lines drawn in the sand soon enough. I hope, anyway.

Business Networking: This is still based on what it originally was and still is, today. This is where business people come together to explore areas of common interests and to see where their common interests lie. This is why Associations like Unions, Master Builders, Master Plumbers, Small Business Associations etc form a specific group in which they invite like-minded, similar or complimentary businesses to join; because they all share some common area of interest that they can benefit from.

It is important for all businesses, both on the Internet and those that have a physical street address, to join a business network group in their community where they can socialise with like minded people, and get more business from those that they in turn can pass business on to. This is the basis of a good network.

1. How did you come to be in your line of work? Often people fall into their job through a chance encounter or a stroke of luck - these stories are often interesting, and recounting them will bring your new contact alive in a way that a straightforward discussion about current business never does.

3. What changes are happening, or can you predict happening, within your industry? 4. What do you regard as your greatest achievement in business to date? Another great way of breaking the ice and getting to know someone better.

5. What do you love about your work? Someone else's business will come alive for you if you listen to them describing their favourite activities.

6. Are there things you wish you could change? A natural follow-on from the above.

7. How would you like people to describe your contribution to your industry? This gets away from day-to-day business and allows them to discuss their deeper aspirations if they wish.

Any of these questions will provide you with a more enjoyable and memorable encounter, and with luck will ensure you are remembered likewise.

What else could be more appealing than the thought of being heard not just by your group of friends but to the whole wide world. And that is where I feel these sites are here to stay. It just emphasizes the fact that man is a social being and shall always remain so.

15 Tips For Networking Events

Many people have a hard time going to networking events. The biggest reasons are that they never have thought about how to deal with them. To help them we list here 15 tips that might directly impact the experience on receptions, cocktail drinks, mixers, conferences, seminars and other networking events.

Remember to bring your business cards. Help people to help you. If they want to connect you to somebody, give them the "tools" to do so. Prepare your Sticky Story© or Elevator Story. This is the answer to the question: "And what do you do?" Be prepared to give an answer that sticks with people so they can tell about you to their network. Give and Receive. Look for what you can do for other people first. Think what you can offer without expecting in return (for example tips like the ones you are reading now). Be a graceful receiver as well. When talking with someone: give your undivided attention. If you are easily distracted by people walking in and out a room, position yourself with your back towards the door. Listen more than talking yourself. Look for things you have in common. This makes the rest of the conversation (and every future conversation with this person) much easier. Tip: there are always 3 things you have in common and that can be used as conversation starters: theme/topic/speaker, location and organisation. Look for ways to help people. Mind your body language: smile, make eye contact, be relaxed,... Don't stay with the same person or group of people the whole time. Networking events are organised to meet other people as well. And think about this: maybe you don't want to meet other people, but the other person does. Don't monopolize their time. Introduce people to each other. Remember details about people you have met. Help yourself by writing them down on the back of their business card or on a piece of paper. Then transfer them to an electronic contact system like your e-mail contact folder, a spreadsheet or database. Exchange business cards when you can help each other, not to gather and distribute as many cards as possible. Networking is NOT selling. The goal of networking is starting and maintaining relationships. Making a sell is one of many possible outcomes. Follow up. And do it in a timely and respectful way. Share these tips with the people you meet. Especially if you find it hard to open a conversation or are nervous about talking with strangers, say something like "I have just read some tips about networking. What is your opinion about ..." (fill in the dots with the tip you want to talk about)

Wireless Networking - Router Vs Access Point

While planning for your wireless network you might be asking what is the difference between a router and an access point. You need to think of a router as more of a server because it performs many functions like a server. An access point only provides a portal for wireless client to connect to your existing LAN.

Routers can perform many functions. Routers can connect many different WLANs together acting like a traffic cop. Routers also act as a DHCP server. A DHCP server assigns dynamic IP address to your computer every time your computer starts up. If you don't have a DHCP server then you will have to assign each computer on your network a permanent IP address.

As I have said before your router can also act like a traffic cop. You can use a router to perform port forwarding to certain computers on your LAN. For example you can direct all internet traffic looking for your game server's port number to a specific computer on your LAN.

Wireless Networking - Router Vs Access Point

The ability to connect multiple computers to the internet is one of the main features of a router. The router is assigned one WAN IP address from your ISP. This IP address is called a public IP address that everyone on the internet can see. Because you have multiple computers connected to your router the router uses a protocol called NAT Network address translation NAT will assign the computers that are behind your routers IP address, private IP addresses. NAT acts as a firewall because computers on the internet cannot in theory even see your computers. They will only see the IP address of your router. NAT does block traffic from reaching your computers but it will not block Trojans from going out to the internet. That is why I do recommend installing a firewall on your LAN computers.

The role of an access point on a LAN is to give the wireless user a door way to enter. The more people that enter the door at the same time the slower they will go. 802.11b access points say they will give you a through put rate of 11mps but the actual rate is around 5MPS. 802.11g has a rating of 54mbps with an actual through put of 20mbps. The access points do have most of the same security features as a router such as WEP, WPA, 8021x and TKPI but they will not have the traffic cop functions like a router. Also the access points will not have NAT which would add an unnecessary layer to your network. To keep it simple access points just simulate plugging in your laptop to a port in the wall and that's it.A router is used on the border of you network to act as a traffic cop deciding who can come in and blocking those you want to keep out.

The history of wireless networks and of wireless networking goes hand in hand. Without the discovery of technology such as the radio, wireless technology would not exist at all today. The history of wireless networking goes as far back as the 1800's with the advent of radio waves. The advent of more technology grew throughout the years and expanded to what we communicated with today.

In 1888, a Hamburg, Germany born physicist named Heinrich Rudolf Herz produced his first radio wave ever. By 1894 this radio wave production became a way of communication. Telegraph wires were used to receive the radio waves in signal form. Herz opened the way for radio, television, and radar with his discovery of electromagnetic waves. An Italian inventor named Marchese Guglielmo Marconi then expanded the radius of radio wave sending to two miles, becoming the "father of the radio." By 1899, this form of telecommunication could travel pretty far for its time. Marconi could send a signal 9 miles across the Bristol Channel. He eventually expanded the radius to 31 miles across the English Channel to France. By 1901 the communication area became immense. Marconi could send signals across the entire Atlantic Ocean.

World War II became a big stepping stone for the radio wave. The United States was the first party to use radio waves for data transmission during the war. This use of radio waves could have quite possibly won the war for the Americans. The use of radio wave data communication lead to a lot of speculation to whether the radio signals could be expanded into something bigger than it currently was. In 1971, a group of researchers under the lead of Norman Abramson, at the University of Hawaii, created the first "packet-switched" radio communications network entitled "Alohanet." Alohanet was the first wireless local area network, otherwise known as a WLAN. The first WLAN was not much, but it was a large discovery. The Alohanet WLAN was comprised of seven computers that communicated to each other. In 1972, Alohanet connected with the WLAN system Arpanet on the mainland. This length of connect was ground breaking in telecommunications between computers.

The first types of WLAN technology used an interface in which became over crowded for communication. Small appliances and industrial machinery caused interference so the technology had to be updated. The second type of WLAN technology to be released ended up being four times faster than its predecessor at 2Mbps per second. We use the third format of WLAN today, though our current WLAN system runs at the same speed as the second system released.

In 1990, the 802.11 Working Group was established to work towards a WLAN standard for all computers to communicate from. In 1997, IEEE 802.11 was accepted as the standard data communication format for wireless local area networks. The technology continues to grow today. Governments and large corporations are constantly looking out for the latest and fastest standard to work from.

The expansion of wireless networking will likely continue for decades to come.
